27 things I’ve learned in 27 years

Birthdays are a funny thing. As a kid you can’t wait for your birthday. You get cake and presents! As a teenager it means getting your drivers license and buying alcohol. But then you get older and suddenly birthdays aren’t fun anymore. Now all you have to look forward to are grey hairs and wrinkles. But if you’re like me, you appreciate every birthday you get no matter how old you’re turning.

A birthday to me means I was blessed with another year.

  1. Never apologize for who you are.
  2. You will never get what you do not ask for.
  3. All that matters is how you see yourself.
  4. Never hate what hates you.
  5. There is more light than darkness.
  6. There is no reason to have a Plan B because it’s just a distraction from Plan A.
  7. Your heart is all that matters. Just your heart. Work on that before anything else.
  8. It’s okay to love and let go.
  9. Only compete with yourself, no one else.
  10. All that glitters is not always gold.
  11. In those quiet moments, remember this. Your heart beats only for you.
  12. So much can change in so little time.
  13. Labels shouldn’t exist. Whether you’re gay or straight, black or white; the only person who can define you… is you.
  14. Invest in your education. Not a new car, or a big house. Invest in learning.
  15. Quality over quantity, in every aspect you can think of.
  16. Make your life amazing. So amazing that when you are old and grey, your grandchildren will beg you to tell them of your adventures. Live a life full of stories.
  17. Don’t ever isolate yourself – no matter how hurt you are.
  18. The love you have for yourself is the strongest love possible.
  19. If you need to cry, cry. Cry until you are sure you can never cry again.
  20. If you want to get lost in a different world or find an escape – read a book.
  21. If you are passionate about something, spend your entire life pursing it. Even if you never succeed, it is not a waste I promise you.
  22. Be honest. Tell people how important they are to you, how much you love someone, and how grateful you are. You will never say it enough.
  23. Laughter is the best cure for anything.
  24. Be nice to your parents.
  25. Time does not heal wounds, but it does help.
  26. It will all make sense someday
  1. You learn a little more about who you are each and every day.

  1. What an inspiring post! Bur don’t write off the coming years, life is an adventure at every age. I’ve just turned 83 and will soon publish my first book. How I enjoy my kids, grandkids, and friends. But it is hard to start losing so many of them.
