We’re Taught to Hate

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
― Nelson MandelaLong Walk to Freedom

We all get mad; we disrespect each other and treat each other poorly. Nobody is perfect. I have found myself making too many mistakes, hating too much, and have taken too much of it all at once. I would be lying if I said it didn’t consume me. I hate someone because of their opinions or because of the way they treat someone else, and it consumes me. If there is one thing I hate, it is someone whose heart is evil. Someone fueled by power, greed. I am surrounded by it. I listen to it on a daily basis. I cannot go a day in this life without looking in the eyes of those around me and see hate.

It is so easy to hate. We turn on the news and see innocent people dying, people fighting, and millions of opinions fighting against each other. Society has turned us all against each other. I will never, EVER judge an individual on their religion, on their skin color, or their lifestyle. How can we hate someone we don’t even know? You hate someone because they are black or Muslim yet you know nothing about them. And now because you look at them with hate, they hate you.

It’s a waste of time. Hating people. There is no understanding behind it. Hate makes us all ugly.

We have come a long way, but there is so much farther to go and some days I wonder if we are going backwards.

Regardless of someone’s race, religion, and politics – don’t we all have the same desires at the end of the day? Don’t our hearts all beat the same? At the end of the day, as long as we teach each other to love above all else, we should be able to respect each other’s lives and the decisions we make.

I feel nothing for people who hate. Any hatred towards someone else for whatever reason – gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, etc. – will not destroy them. I promise you this. It will destroy you.
